Discussions around the ownership of the Southland Museum and Art Gallery (SMAG) Trust returned to the table this week.

During the annual meeting of the museum’s trust board member Christine Henderson raised a concern about the acceptance the pyramid building was owned by Invercargill City Council.

She was worried other parties from the Southland community would not able to have their say in discussion about the future of the building.

"It is a Southland museum — it was owned and built by people from Southland.

"For those who want the museum reopened, where do they stand? They have no say at all?"

Chairman Darren Ludlow said the SMAG Trust owned the collection, while ICC owned the building.

A workshop would be held to discuss the future of the pyramid museum, he said.

Gore district councillor and trust member Bret Highsted said he could not understand why the issue was being raised again.

"Whether it represents Invercargill, Gore or Southland, it is a local body who is made up a large number of people in Southland.

"If that local body is prepared to take the financial impact of owning that building, I welcome [that] ... I think we have no capacity, or capability, to deliver the redevelopment of that building. So why are we wanting to re-litigate that issue?"

Mr Highsted said the trust should thank the council, not argue with it.

Mr Ludlow said he would bring the resolutions from the June meeting and the letters presented by council’s chief executive Clare Hadley at the time to support the council’s ownership of the building to help clarify the issue.

During the meeting, the annual report was presented which states the trust operated with a deficit of $75,956.
