Queenstown director for Invercargill airport

A Queenstown representative is set to join the board of Invercargill Airport Ltd.

Mayor Jim Boult said at a meet-the-candidates function in Wanaka on Monday night he had been invited by Invercargill City Holdings (ICH) ''to put forward a representative'' from the Queenstown Lakes district to sit on the board of Invercargill Airport ''to deepen the relationship and the understanding between the airports in our region''.

There has been a push from some Queenstown and Wanaka residents for air traffic to be shared with Invercargill, to take the pressure off Queenstown Airport.

Mr Boult said yesterday the Queenstown Lakes District Council (QLDC) had had ''very positive discussion'' with ICH about the appointment of a Queenstown Lakes-based director.

''This would be a resident of the district with no affiliation to [the Queenstown Airport Corporation].''

Mr Boult said the QLDC was supportive, and the matter was with ICH and the Invercargill City Council.

''I think this is an excellent step in furthering the relationship between two districts with converging tourism interests.''

Queenstown Airport Corporation chief executive Colin Keel has pointed out previously the Commerce Act limits the extent of co-operation between companies.
