Te Anau Waitangi Charitable Trust members will host a range of free activities for families to enjoy in commemoration of Waitangi Day this weekend.

Some of the activities include a 45-minute tour of Lake Te Anau with historian Ron Bull, a flaxweaving session with weaver Des Cooper and screenings of Moana and the New Zealand film Cousins. A mixed media exhibition Te Taiao which focuses on the natural world will be on display at the Old Hospice Shop building on Main St.

It will feature a korowai (protective cloak) with more than 200 paper feathers which were crafted by children from the area.

They were four different flags throughout Te Anau and Manapouri which represented a part of the country’s heritage including the New Zealand flag, the Silver Fern, the national Maori flag and the United Tribes of New Zealand flag.

Chairwoman Jill Larrivee said she encouraged people to get involved with the spirit of Waitangi Day.

Due to the Red traffic light setting the event would proceed with a few changes, she said .

"Notably, in the interest of extending manaakitanga [care] to our community and our invited guests, the trust has decided to postpone events requiring travel from outside of Southland and Otago.

"We have further reduced the group size for planned activities but have increased the number of opportunities to participate."

She was grateful to the businesses, sponsors and individuals who had supported them.
