Wind hampers fire crews in Southland

Strong winds hampered firefighters battling an early morning fire in a stand of trees in Western Southland.
A Fire Service spokesman said crews from Blackmount, Ohai, Otautau and Tuatapere were called about 1.30am today to a blaze in Eastern Bush, north of Tuatapere, for about three hours.

The fire was threatening a house in Otahu-Eastern Bush Rd and residents were evacuated as a precaution.

As crews battled the blaze, the wind lifted roofing iron from a house in the area, he said.

Crews had not reported anyone sustaining injuries or any structure being damaged by the fire, he said.
