The re-established Clinton petrol station opened last June as a self-service 24-hour fuel stop, with locally owned RD Petroleum fuel supply and branding. The old store building behind the fuel stop has been demolished to make room for a 130sq m retail store.
Clinton Community Company chairman John Cochrane said a consent application was lodged, the tender let to Calder Stewart, and he hoped work would begin in two months.
"It's been around two years since this project started, so it's been a long wait. Hopefully, everything will be finished by the end of September."
The shop would be community-owned and stock "food to go" and seasonal farm supplies. The estimated cost was about $250,000.
The suggested name was the Clinton Express Co-Op. Residents established a community company, with locals as shareholders, which bought the petrol station.
