Damien McNamara has opened what he believes is New Zealand's first full-time dedicated steampunk art gallery - Professor Damotimus Tipotus' Libratory - upstairs in Oamaru's Woolstore Complex.
Steampunk has taken on a life of its own in Oamaru, with the town now dubbed New Zealand's steampunk capital.
Mr McNamara, who has been involved in the town's Victorian scene for 15 years and will be competing in the national penny-farthing championships today, said steampunk had "taken off"'.
The gallery was to be officially opened last night and will be open to the public tomorrow, during the annual Victorian fete in Harbour and Tyne Sts.
Initially, it will be open on Fridays and Sundays, between 10am and 3pm "and then just go from there", Mr McNamara said.
Mr McNamara has a fascination for steampunked weapons and thought Steampunk, which promoted the Victorian era with a science-fiction twist, was good for Oamaru, attracting visitors.
