This year’s Warbirds Over Wanaka International Airshow free lakefront event will pay tribute to Warbirds’ founder Tim Wallis and other helicopter pilots involved in the early days of live deer recovery by including  a live "moose" capture.

Warbirds  general manager Ed Taylor said the scenario would involve the appearance of a helicopter from the early days of deer recovery in the region and a descendant of the first herd of moose released in Fiordland back in the early 1900s.

"There have been no confirmed sightings of the animals in many years but we have a team working on it."

"If they are unsuccessful, they have assured me they will find a substitute," Mr Taylor said.

The first lakeside event was held in 2014 to promote the airshow and provide a free event for the local community.

Mr Taylor said it had proved so popular it was now an integral part of the show and attracted thousands of people to vantage points around the Wanaka lakefront late afternoon on Good Friday.

This year will mark the return of the Catalina flying boat which was a "big crowd favourite" in 2016.

Another expected highlight for the lakefront event will be Royal New Zealand Air Force involvement for the first time.

"The RNZAF are hoping to have one of their Seasprite helicopters put on a winching display over the water plus have the mighty Hercules close the show with a spectacular flare display."

"This flare display set against magnificent Lake Wanaka and the mountain backdrop should be truly stunning" Mr Taylor said.

The 30th anniversary Warbirds Over Wanaka International Airshow will take place on March 30, 31 and April 1 at Wanaka Airport.

The free lakeside event will be held on March 30 at 4.30pm.
