An extreme slalom competition capped off the three-day New Zealand Secondary Schools Canoe Slalom Championships at the Hawea Whitwater Park today.

The competition saw four paddlers in each race battle each other down a course with numerous obstacles, while also performing a mandatory eskimo roll. It is a new slalom discipline introduced globally in 2016 and popular among the world's best paddlers.

There were 87 competitors across the three-day event from 16 schools around New Zealand as well as a team from Australia.

Organiser Mike Kelly said the event had been fantastic and noted how many of those from the North Island had not competed in a whitewater park before and were stoked to be able to do so.

Many of the competitiors will travel to Tekapo for the national selection races over the Easter weekend.
