A Wanaka design-tech start-up which has designed a chair using flax fibre has won an international design award.

Revology, based at the Cell in Wanaka, won a gold award at the Melbourne Design Awards last week for its sustainably designed chair, which uses a combination of flax fibres and a special bio-composite resin.

The award was part of the Design 100 awards which took place in eight cities across the world, with winners selected from 40 design categories.

Co-founder Monique Kelly said the award was a surprise as they were entered by their designer Philippe Guichard, who is based in Melbourne.

‘‘It’s fantastic to be recognised at an event like this and Melbourne is really one of the big Design 100 awards,’’ she said.

To be recognised for the design after working on it since 2014 was gratifying, she said.

‘‘We love our work and it’s fantastic to see other people feel the same way.’’

Next month, they will present the design at Paris Design Week. They hope to market the product next year and plan to crowd-fund the project in March. The award would act as motivation, she said.
