General economy thriving

Tourism is reported to have delivered $500 million to Wanaka's economy last year but ''there are indications other sectors in the economy are also doing very well''.

Centre of Unique Business Evolution (Cube) Business Development Manager Jason Watkins said the ''big wow'' figures from tourism and construction would always be reported but there were other diverse businesses and companies making a significant contribution to the Wanaka economy.

Mr Watkins said entrepreneurship in the Upper Clutha was very much ''alive and well'' and that was reflected in the second Cube and Ignite Wanaka Entrepreneur Speaker session in Wanaka tonight being sold out.

More than 100 people have booked to hear a panel of local entrepreneurs talk about their setbacks and successes, as well as new information technology and sustainability in the marketplace.

Mr Watkins said a Cube business mentoring programme initiative launched in April was oversubscribed within two weeks which also indicated a large number of entrepreneurs in the community wishing to get support

He said 77% of the applicants seeking mentors were not from tourism or the construction sectors.

''This showed there are a lot of people who are trying different things and that's obviously great for diversity in the Wanaka economy,'' Mr Watkins said.

The Cube has 25 mentors which Mr Watkins described as ''fantastic'' but he was seeking to expand the pool to deal with the demand, specifically mentors in marketing and business strategy.
