The wheels are in motion for Wānaka to get updated signage as over $380,000 is set aside to improve poor wayfinding in the region.

As part of the budget, money has been set aside to help improve wayfinding in Wānaka, which includes signage being installed around active transport networks or shared paths.

The Queenstown Lakes District Council announced $381,000 in funding to the Upper Clutha Community board earlier this month.

The council informed the board that a project manager had already been allocated to start the planning process.

Improving wayfinding has been on the board’s discussion table for over seven years and with a budget in place, real changes can be pushed forward.

Community board chairperson, Simon Telfer welcomed the funding, he said it would help make the town center much easier to navigate, especially for tourists.

He referred to the cycle paths on the lakefront, Aubrey Rd and Anderson Rd, saying there was little signage to explain the connectivity of the paths.

It was still unclear how much of the Upper Clutha the budget could cover.

It was also unclear whether it would be sufficient to also improve wayfinding in other locations where it was needed such as Albert Town.

The council’s transport and parks and recreations team were working towards creating an initial plan and design.

Mr Telfer said there was still some background work to be done and hoped that the final plan would be presented to the community board by the end of the year.
