Those on board a helicopter that crashed at Wanaka Airport this morning believe the incident was due to a mechanical failure.

Police said they were called to the scene at 11.28am.

Two people were in the helicopter at the time and were not injured.

The incident occurred off the runway, so the airport remained open, police said.

The Civil Aviation Authority had been advised.

Senior Sergeant Steve Watt, of Wanaka, said early indications from those on board were that mechanical failure was the cause.

However, the incident is subject to CAA investigation, and it was too early to confirm the cause at this stage, he said.

A reporter at the scene said the crash happened during helicopter pilot training.

Another helicopter was in the air at the time and landed to check if the passengers were injured in the crash before taking to the air again.

St John and Fire and Emergency New Zealand were also called to the crash.
