The Gate Ltd has applied for a licence to open the store on the site of the former Countdown Metro Wānaka supermarket, which closed in August.
The site is owned by Allan Dippie’s Willowridge Developments Ltd.
The Gate Ltd also runs the Harvest Hotel and Five Stags Bar & Restaurant in Cromwell, and Super Liquor Wānaka, Cromwell, Alexandra, Lorneville and Remarkables Park (Queenstown).
Chief executive Glen Christiansen said all going well the company planned to open the new bottle shop in February.
‘‘It’s a good opportunity, a good site and great off-street parking.’’
He said the existing Wānaka store in Reece Cres would continue running, as it had a good loyal customer base and the town was growing.
The company’s application to the Queenstown Lakes District Council last year to open a Super Liquor store at Lake Hāwea subdivision Longview drew a record-breaking 538 submissions in opposition, including one from the Ministry of Health.
A three-day hearing took place last month and a decision has yet to be announced.
The Ardmore St store’s liquor licence application lists the opening hours as 9am-10pm, Monday to Sunday.
The last day for members of the public to lodge an objection is February 9.
