Rockfall closes Haast Pass

Motorists trying to traverse the Haast Pass are being thwarted by a large rockfall which has closed the road until at least tomorrow.

The NZ Transport Agency advised that heavy rain in recent days had triggered the rockfall and State Highway 6 (the Haast Pass) was closed just after 3pm today.

NZTA's Moira Whinham said the highway would remain closed overnight and tomorrow morning, with an update at midday tomorrow.

The rock, at Clarke Bluff, the site of previous rockfalls, was too large to be moved with machinery today, Ms Whinham said

Drivers wre being turned back at Makarora and Haast today, and the closure was signposted on the route at each end.

“We will be doing our best to clear the road as soon as we can in the morning.”
