Mataura School pupils Kirat Uppal (left) and Scarlett Murray, both 11, wave the flag they made to support South Africa at the Fifa Women’s World Cup.

Fifty-five senior pupils attended the game between Argentina and South Africa in Dunedin last week.

Principal Susan Dennison said pupils and staff were sponsored the tickets and a bus to attend.

"It was an awesome experience that we know they will never forget."

The group was seated in three sections throughout the stadium.

"The crowd was a whole new experience, with the Argentine fans in big sections together singing, cheering and dancing to their drums.

"It was a close game and it was great to be in the moment when both teams scored."

The game was drawn 2-all.

"Our students were also very impressed with how fast the ball moved and how far they could kick it down the pitch."

 - South African forward Thembi Kgatlana starred for her country, setting up her side’s first goal in the 33rd minute before scoring her own in the 66th.

Argentina were down 2-0 until the 74th minute when they finally found the back of the net through a screaming volley from Sophia Braun from outside the box.

Romina Nunez levelled from a corner five minutes later.
