A fantastic effort at the Bridge 2 Bridge Waterski Classic race up north brought waterski racing glory back to Gore, and a first-time win for Enforcer Racing.

The race, held in Hamilton, featured a weekend of boat and waterski racing up and down the Waikato River.

It is the biggest waterski racing event in New Zealand.

Enforcer Racing, a team based in Gore, comprises boat owner and "observer" Hayden Sayer, skiers Luke Faid and Kris Horsnell, with Craig Chittock driving.

Riding up and down the Waikato River at speeds up to 83 miles per hour (133kmh), Mr Chittock kept an even speed while dragging the two skiers around 6 metres behind, with Mr Sayer watching and informing the entire time.

The team won the 250 horsepower class, which is the first win for their boat after seven years of competing in the event, and the second time a South Island team has won it.

Mr Chittock said the crew trains once a week in Alexandra, which has been difficult due to the recent wild weather, but they managed to pull through to bring home the trophy.

"It’s not just about having a fast boat and driving fast, there’s a lot more.

"Everyone has got to be on their game," he said.

Enforcer Racing also won the "Masters" race where speeds were capped at 80mph, with penalties for going over, setting a record in the process, as well as winning the social race.

The main race, where Mr Chittock rode with the skiers being towed behind, can be a gruelling affair, racing from Cambridge to Taupiri with a time of 25 minutes down and 14 minutes back.

"The big race, we’re about 40 minutes all up. [The skiers] can get pretty burnt out by then," he said.

It was a team effort to get the boat up to Hamilton and to win the race, and Mr Chittock said he was very thankful for not only the team and their supporters, but also the multitude of sponsors and local businesses who chipped in to bring home the gold.

Enforcer Racing will have a break over the summer moths before the next race in April.
