Trampers flown out after flooding

Heavy rain in Fiordland led to more than two dozen trampers having to be helicoptered out of the Milford Track.

More than 250mm of rain in the area yesterday made the last stage of the Milford Track from Quinton Lodge to Mitre Peak impossible to traverse, leading to 28 guided walkers being lifted off the track and dropped off at Milford Airport.

It took six separate helicopter loads to pick up and drop off the guided walkers, and although holiday-maker Cate Hamilton was disappointed she could not finish the track, she said the rain was "pretty spectacular".

"It was pretty flooded. We saw it coming in — there was no way we could walk it."
