Schools have the chance to play  a big part in this year’s Stadium to Surf event — with a big carrot at the finish line.

The Stadium to Surf organisers  have  decided to have a special school grade where pupils can register for the March 12 event and be in to win a prize.

The school with the highest percentage of entrants per school roll will win  a Kelly Sports experience valued at $1000.

There are two prizes up for grabs — one for secondary schools and another for intermediate/primary schools.

Carisbrook School is the first school to register for the event, with 20 pupils lining up for the 3km run. School principal Ben Sincock said a key focus for the school this year was on health and physical education, so the Stadium to Surf run was an ideal event for the children.

The school was putting more  focus on sport; it now had  a sports academy and the school’s pool had been upgraded.

Board of Trustees chairman Steve Coombe said the school saw the benefits of fitness and the Stadium to Surf event was a great way to get pupils  involved.

Sport Otago business development and events manager Michael Smith said Carisbrook School was the first school to enter.

All schools in Dunedin had been contacted yesterday about the event. It was not only pupils who could link to the school but the wider school community could also register and be counted towards the prize.

Those running the 3km race would pay  an entry fee of $5. while the 5km event cost  $10 and the full 10km run/walk  $25.

The event was just over three weeks away on March 12.

The 10km event course was from Forsyth Barr Stadium to Hancock Park while the shorter races would take place around Hancock Park near St Kilda Beach. There are no hills  in the entire race.

A free sports display, offering  a variety of sports for people to try,  will take place at Hancock Park after the event.

The Stadium to Surf event is organised by Sport Otago, Athletics Otago and the Otago Daily Times. It is sponsored by the Athlete’s Foot.
