A few big names are missing but the Tall Blacks have named a solid squad for next month's Commonwealth Games.

The side is without its three European-based stars - Isaac Fotu and brothers Corey and Tai Webster - but has put together a reasonable roster from its New Zealand and Australian-based players.

It also includes six non-travelling reserves, one of whom is Otago big man Sam Timmins, currently at the University of Washington in the USA.

The only player who was in the team that won silver in 2006, the last time the sport was included in the Games, is Mika Vukona.

He will lead the team, returning after missing its recent games against China and Korea.

"I remember that tournament vividly," he said of the 2006 campaign.

"We won silver but what I remember is being in a great position to win gold.

"We led the Aussies going into the final quarter and it was only a couple of key moments that saw the game go away from us.

"To have another chance at winning a medal and to do so with this new group of players and coaches is a huge honour.

"The first few days in the village will be a bit of a shock to some of the younger players. But I know they will get their heads down and go to work.

"They have shown their ability to cope under pressure at the Asia Cup and then last month in China and Korea. This is an exciting group to be a part of and I am extremely proud to lead them."

Tom Abercrombie and Alex Pledger offer more experience, although the side does have a younger look to it.

Shea Ili, Reuben Te Rangi, Rob Loe and Finn Delany will all play key roles, while Jarrod Kenny is likely to see more minutes in the absence of the Websters.

Promising big man Tohi Smith-Milner has been included as he continues to impress, while Ethan Rusbatch, Jordan Ngatai and Derone Raukawa complete the squad.

The Tall Blacks find themselves in a tough pool, with Australia, Canada and Nigeria standing in their way.

They open their campaign on April 6 against Nigeria.

In the United States, Timmins' Washington Huskies advanced through the first round of college basketball's National Invitational Tournament with a 77-74 win over Boise State.

They face a tough opponent in their second round match in Saint Mary's College on Tuesday.
