Bowls: Games back to old format

It is back to the old. The format for the Commonwealth Games bowls in Glasgow has been changed.

The set system was used in the past two Commonwealth Games, in Melbourne (2006) and Delhi (2010).

''It has gone back to the 15 ends for the pairs, triples and fours and 21 shots for the singles,'' New Zealand selector Terry Scott said.

''But it will be played over a time limit of 2hr 15min. It is going to be a lot quicker.''

There will be four sections of six teams and the top two in each section will advance to the quarterfinals.

''The set system is a lottery and is generally not well received by the players,'' Scott said.

Smaller teams will be in Glasgow. Each team will consist of five males and five females, instead of six players of each gender.

Each player will be involved in two disciplines, instead of one. The last Commonwealth Games featured only singles, pairs and triples, but fours will be added in Glasgow.

Bowls New Zealand has received a funding grant of $580,000 for its high-performance programme for the next two years.

It intends to have a more intense preparation for Glasgow than it had for the Commonwealth Games in Delhi in 2010. Val Smith was the only New Zealand bowler to reach the podium there, when she won silver in the women's singles. A New Zealand team will play in a seven-nation event in Scotland in August to prepare for the Glasgow Commonwealth Games next year.

The high-performance squad has been named for the transtasman series at Auckland in March. The under-25 development team and the under-18 team will be playing Australian opponents at the same time.

''That will begin our programme leading to the Commonwealth Games,'' Scott said.

Nelson bowler Jo Edwards will attempt to regain her crown at the world cup singles in Australia in April.

She won the title three years in a row, from 2009 to 2011, before losing it to Alison Merrien (Guernsey) in last year's final. Edwards will be joined by fellow Black Jack Tony Grantham (Auckland), who won the New Zealand singles title in Dunedin in 2007.

The world cup singles will be held at the Warilla Bowls and Recreation Club, New South Wales, from April 9-17.
