Bowls: Sound win for Wellington siblings

Two Wellington siblings ended the day in style with a big win at the New Zealand mixed pairs championships in Dunedin yesterday.

Tim (21) and Nicole (19) Toomey, of the Victoria club, beat the Balclutha pair of Tony Cook and Christine King 24-11 in the third-round game at the Westpac Bowls Stadium.

The Toomeys took control when Tim trailed the jack back on the fourth end to lead for the first time, 6-5.

They added five more shots on the next three ends to lead 11-5 after seven of the 16 ends and the game was virtually over when they scored a five on the ninth end and two on the next to lead 18-6.

The Toomeys started serious bowls at secondary school, with Nicole winning the girls singles at the New Zealand secondary schools championships and Tim finishing third in the boys singles and runner-up in the Kitty Hawk singles.

They lost to the two unbeaten teams in the first two rounds.

They were beaten by the husband and wife combination of Bruce and Colleen Ferrick (Taradale) 14-13 and by Scott Mouton and Linda Ralph (Auckland) 21-13.

Colleen Ferrick played the winning shot on the final end when the Ferricks beat Nelson's Murray Scott and Colleen Earl 16-13 in the last game.

Two more rounds will be played today with the key final game between Auckland and Taradale, starting at the Westpac Bowls Stadium at 11am.
