Plenty of serious silverware up for grabs with four finals to be contested

The PBA Dunedin branch finals day will take place tomorrow with plenty of silverware up for grabs.

The event at the Dunedin Bowls Stadium will kick off at 9am and there are four finals to be played: the world singles, the ranking singles, which has two finals, and the world pairs.

Three finals have already been completed with Andy McLean winning the Shanghai singles, Roger Stevens winning the Scottish singles and Andy Kelly taking out the international singles.

In the World singles, Beth Brown, of Taieri will take on Ray Webster, who plays out of the stadium in one of the semifinals. The winner of that match will take on Gore bowler Sheldon Bagrie-Howley in the final tomorrow afternoon.

In the first of the ranking singles, Joko Susilo, of Andersons Bay will play Oliver Mason, of Forbury Park in one semifinal. The winner of this encounter will play Brian Harvey, of Waikiwi in the final.

The second ranking singles will have Mitch Cook, of Brighton play Paul Everett, of St Clair. Whoever wins that match will play youngster Tom Taiaroa, of Kaikorai, in the final.

The world pairs will have Methven duo Jeff Nowell and Rob Fensom play against Webster and Russell Dawe.

The winner of the world singles will go to Auckland at the start of next month to play other regional winners. Should they come out on top in Auckland a trip to the United Kingdom is in the offers in January next year although under current border restrictions it may not happen.

Nowell has had an impressive year and is in with a chance to win the rookie of the year, while Taiaroa (21) may win the award for best under-25 bowler.

Dunedin bowlers Elliot Mason and Kelly are set to represent NZ in a transtasman challenge which was due to be played in Dunedin this year.

But with the border restrictions it has been pushed back to May next year although it will still be played in Dunedin.

PBA co-ordinator Ken Walker said Covid-19 had been frustrating and the programme had been moved but everyone had coped well with the new schedule.

Covid restrictions have limited physical spectators to a maximum of 100 but the event will be livestreamed by Bowls Dunedin.

"I was really thrilled with the continued progress of the PBA in Dunedin and many new names have again come to the fore and have already got targets on their backs," Walker said.

"Our annual meeting approved a ceiling of 68 members and already I have membership applications from players wanting to compete next year which is a healthy sign."
