Broom has to wait longer for ton

Talk about the nervous 90s - Neil Broom is set to spend even more time poised on the cusp of a major milestone.

The veteran Otago batsman was set to bring up 100 first-class games for his province last week.

But poor weather and a damp outfield prevented any play between Otago and Auckland at the University of Otago Oval last week.

He was due to be named in the side for tomorrow's match against Northern Districts in Dunedin.

But the 35-year-old right-hander has a forearm injury and is being rested as a precaution ahead of the white ball season.

Otago's next first-class game is not until late February, so Broom will have to wait until then to reach the mark.

It will not bother him. He retired from first-class cricket last year and that left him stranded on 98 games for Otago.

But his return this summer means he will eventually get to a ton.

He has been replaced in the side by Anaru Kitchen, who is fresh from two impressive showings for New Zealand A.

He struck an unbeaten 50 and 48 against an England XI in two warm-up twenty20 games.

There is one other change from the team named for the abandoned match against Auckland. Former Black Caps spinner Mark Craig has a knee complaint and has been replaced by all-rounder Josh Finnie.

It is unclear how bad Craig's injury is. Assistant coach Anton Roux said there ''could be some ligament damage; still awaiting final prognosis''.

-Otago back-up keeper Max Chu has been called up for the New Zealand A team to play a two-day warm-up match against England. That game gets under way in Whangarei on November 15.
