Canterbury wicketkeeper Reece Young is the big winner and Auckland gloveman Gareth Hopkins the major casualty after New Zealand cricket's revamped selection panel quickly wound into gear, today naming several newcomers across three squads.

Young is the only new-cap named in a 13-man test squad to face Pakistan in two matches, starting with the first test at Hamilton on January 7, replacing Hopkins who has failed to grasp any of the ample opportunities afforded to him in recent months.

Young has also been included in a 30-man preliminary squad for the one-day World Cup on the subcontinent in February-March at the expense of Hopkins, while Northern Districts' Peter McGlashan will keep wickets for the upcoming three-match Twenty20 series against Pakistan after being named in a 14-man squad.

The selection panel of former coach Mark Greatbatch, Glenn Turner and Lance Cairns, in consultation with new coach John Wright, has an eye to the future in naming 18-year-old Central Districts speedster Adam Milne in the Twenty20 and one-day squads, along with Australian-born Canterbury batsman Dean Brownlie and Wellington left-arm spinning allrounder Luke Woodcock.

Brownlie, a right-handed top order player who is particularly accomplished playing the short ball, has impressed in the New Zealand A setup while Woodcock has been rewarded for consistency over several domestic seasons, both with bat and ball.

Ian Butler returns to the Twenty20 squad, which will be captained by Ross Taylor in the absence of Daniel Vettori, who is resting a sore back, while allrounder James Franklin, a shining light with the bat in an otherwise dark 0-5 one-day series loss in India, has been named in all three squads.

Jeetan Patel and BJ Watling join Hopkins as test casualties following the one-loss, two draw record against India.

"We have kept faith with the majority of the squad who performed well in the test matches against India and are wanting to build on the positive steps the team took in that series,'' Greatbatch said.

"Reece Young gets a chance after performing well over a number of seasons at domestic and NZA level. We believe it's a well balanced squad and we look forward to a competitive test series against a very good Pakistan side.''

Greatbatch added it was a "disappointing'' day for Hopkins.

Speaking about the new caps, Greatbatch said: "Dean Brownlie and Luke Woodcock have both enjoyed very good domestic form over the last couple of seasons and richly deserve their opportunity.

"Adam Milne is a promising young bowler ... with the potential to have a big impact in international cricket for many years ... and we are keen to give him some early exposure. Twenty20 is the ideal format for the new guys to get some international experience and exposure.''

Greatbatch said Brendon McCullum's back was "still not 100 percent'' but he was keen to play in the Twenty20 series, though McGlashan is most likely to keep wickets.

"We are monitoring his recovery closely,'' Greatbatch said of McCullum.

"He will undergo fitness testing later this week and we will make a call on closer to the start of the match.''

The World Cup squad will be trimmed to 15 players by January 19. It includes seven players uncapped at one-day level - Brent Arnel, Doug Bracewell, Rob Nicol, Woodcock, Young, Brownlie and Milne.

"We will continue to closely watch the form of all players involved over the coming month,'' Greatbatch said.

"A number of uncapped guys who have excelled domestically made the squad. We believe it represents the best one-day cricketers we have in New Zealand.''
