Cricket: Laxman draw card as Otago seeks win

Whatever happens in today's State Championship four-day match between Otago and Wellington, the game is likely to be remembered for one player - VVS Laxman.

The star Indian batsman is listed to come in at No 4 and, whether he scores a first-ball duck or notches an elegant century, it is going to be the talking point.

Laxman is one of six Indian test players released to play some first-class cricket in preparation for the three-match test series against New Zealand beginning in Hamilton later this month.

Wellington has Indian right-arm medium pace bowler Lakshmipathy Balaji bolstering its ranks for the game.

Caretaker Otago coach Mark Bracewell described Laxman's one-off appearance for the Volts as a huge opportunity for the younger players in the squad to learn from the 102-test veteran.

It is also a great opportunity for cricket fans to get along to the University Oval and see one of the world's best batsmen in action.

"I'm really excited for the players because having someone of his calibre in the dressing sheds has got to be a buzz," Bracewell said.

"I'm hoping he'll have a chat to our younger cricketers and be able to work with them."

Laxman will likely field in the slips and is expected to take a full part in the game.

For Otago's sake, hopefully he will get some runs.

The Volts are in fourth place with four points from four matches and desperately need an outright win to close the gap on Central Districts, which leads the competition with 25 points, from Wellington on 18 and Auckland on 11.

While Otago has been bolstered by Laxman's inclusion, it is without its Black Caps trio of Brendon McCullum, Neil Broom and Ian Butler.

Former test opener Aaron Redmond and coach Mike Hesson are on duty with New Zealand A, and wicketkeeper-batsman Derek de Boorder has broken his finger and will miss the rest of the season.

Bracewell is confident Otago has the depth to off-set those losses.

There were no really new players because of the depth of the squad, he said.

"We are just able to accommodate guys like Hamish Rutherford and Shaun Haig back into the four-day squad."

Haig will take over the wicketkeeping role and bat at No 5 and Rutherford, who made a big impression in the twenty/20 tournament where he was one of the leading run-scorers, will open with skipper Craig Cumming.

However, Bracewell expects his side will be rusty after a diet of limited-overs cricket and will take time to adjust to the different demands of the four-day game.

"I think all of the sides will have the same problem. It is a big adjustment, especially for the bowlers.

"We were talking about the need to be patient at practice and that will be the biggest adjustment."

The bowlers will have a dramatic increase in workload but Bracewell said the likes of James McMillan and Warren McSkimming were experienced bowlers who would adapt quickly.

In the batting, Cumming and Greg Todd are expected to lead the way.

But most eyes will be on the man nicknamed Very Very Special - VVS Laxman.

The match starts today at 10.30am.
