Cricket: Lowly Taieri topples University-Grange

Taieri 211 all out beat Uni-Grange 207 all out

In a case of David beating Goliath, bottom-placed Taieri toppled leader University-Grange with an upset four-run victory.

A captain's knock of 109 from George Spittle put Taieri in a good position from the start, with fellow opener Ash Simpson (21) and Ruben Simpson (27) both contributing to the 211-run total.

The extra 28 runs which University-Grange's bowlers gave Taieri would come back to hurt in the run chase.

With a solid start, University-Grange was in a comfortable position with Cameron Rutherford scoring a handy 76 runs from 72 balls.

When Rutherford was caught in the 42nd over, his team only needed a further 18 runs with three wickets in hand.

But it would be Taieri's day, as University-Grange's last three wickets fell for just 14 runs, four runs short of a win.

Carisbrook-Dunedin 295/8 beat Albion 246 all out

A century from Sean Eathorne and a terrific display of bowling from Warren McSkimming saw Carisbrook-Dunedin to victory over a fighting Albion side.

Eathorne's 105 was supported by a tidy 74 from Matthew Higgins, which laid the base for a few cheeky runs from the rest of their team, as Carisbrook-Dunedin posted a mammoth 295.

Albion's bowling line-up was unable to make much of an impact on the opposition, with Dan Ford the pick of the bowlers with two wickets from 10 overs.

Albion started well with Mark Craig scoring a tidy 112, but the lower order failed as the last eight wickets fell for just 45 runs.

McSkimming ripped through Albion's batting line-up with four wickets from his 10 overs.

Kaikorai 264/9 beat North East Valley 215 all out

A dominant bowling display from Will Deerness secured a 49-run victory for Kaikorai over North East Valley at Bishops Court on Saturday.

After a slow start from its top three, Kaikorai stared to pile on the runs. Iain Roberston (97), Tim Muir and Matt Hunter were key in Kaikorai posting a respectable 264.

Despite two brilliant spells from captain Jamie Murley and Florian Schmidt with four wickets each, Valley's bowling attack was ineffective, giving away 38 runs in extras.

Valley's batsmen could managed a few good starts, but no-one went on to post a big score needed to chase down Kaikorai's total.

Murley put on a respectable 49 runs but it was not enough, with Deerness picking up four wickets from his 10 overs at a cost of just 29 runs.
