Otago all-rounder Nathan McCullum fashioned a superb century during the first day of the Volts' final three-day trial match at the University Oval yesterday.

McCullum anchored the innings for the Cumming XI, guiding his side to 255 for nine, before retiring hurt on on 125. Earlier in his innings he was hit on the left hand by a ball from left-arm swing bowler Neil Wagner.

The injury is not thought to be serious and he is expected to play today.

His innings included 19 fours and a six, and his 100 came off 159 balls.

Greg Todd also looked good, getting through to 43, and Ian Butler chipped in with 22.

Wagner was the best of the bowlers, with three for 28 from 16.5 overs, including six maidens.

Left-arm spinner Nick Beard took two for 28 from 11 overs.

A poor first innings by Canterbury left Auckland in the box seat at the end of the second day of their State Championship match, NZPA reported from Rangiora yesterday.

Auckland, which scored 398 in its first dig, bowled Canterbury out for 169.

The visitors opted not to enforce the follow on and by the end of the day had amassed a 372-run lead at 143 for five in their second innings.
