Cricket: Omission from shield team final blow for Redmond

Aaron Redmond's miserable summer came to a sad end yesterday.

The former Black Cap has been a terrific performer for Otago since moving south from Canterbury in 2004-05.

But he has been woefully out of form this season and has been left out of the Otago Plunket Shield team named to play Northern Districts in Hamilton beginning tomorrow.

With just four games remaining it is hard to see the 32-year-old forcing his way back into the squad.

The right-hander used up his last lifeline in the five-wicket loss to Central Districts in Queenstown earlier this week. He got starts in both innings with 15 and 20 but it was not enough to save his spot in the side.

He knew it, too. Having nicked out in the second innings, he trudged glumly from the field and gave a rubbish bin a solid whack with his bat before disappearing into the dressing room.

Redmond emerged 10-15 minutes later but did not join the rest of his team-mates, preferring to sit on his own for a period.

The summer started promisingly.

He was appointed captain of the one-day and four-day team but was relieved of the captaincy when his form faltered. He was dropped for the twenty/20 and one-day squads after failing to make an impact in either tournament and yesterday's omission completed an unhappy treble.

In six first-class games this season Redmond has managed to score just 157 runs at an average of 14.27. He forced the selectors' hands.

Left-hander Hamish Rutherford replaces Redmond in the squad.

Experienced medium-pacer Warren McSkimming is unavailable due to a quad injury picked up in Queenstown. He has been replaced by James McMillan, who has recovered from injury.
