Nathan McCullum and Mat Harvie made useful contributions as Otago started its Champions League build-up with a loss in Australia yesterday.

Otago was beaten by six wickets by the Queensland Academy in a twenty/20 game in Brisbane.

McCullum, batting at No 4, smashed 47 off 28 balls as the Volts scored 158 for six after winning the toss and choosing to bat.

Tall pace bowler Harvie then had the best figures, two for 28 off three overs, as the academy side scored 161 for four.

Otago coach Mike Hesson said his side was predictably rusty at times in its first game leading up to the lucrative tournament in India.

"We were a little rusty with the bat early on," Hesson said.

"They're a good young side and they probably caught us on the hop a bit."Hesson said the pitch was good, the outfield was fast and the weather was perfect, offering the Volts a taste of what to expect when they get to India.

Openers Hamish Rutherford (29 off 25 balls) and Shaun Haig (22 off 31) were the other batsmen to get starts for Otago.

Ben Dunk then fired the Queensland Academy to victory with a scintillating unbeaten 79 off 49 balls.

The teams play again today and tomorrow.

Injured Otago fast bowler James McMillan trained yesterday and will test his hamstring in the bowling nets today. He may then play tomorrow.
