Cricket: Otago eager to put gloom behind it

You cannot make improvements to your game sitting inside a motel room, watching the rain run down the window pane.

And that basically sums up the mood of the Otago team at the moment. Everything is just a bit gloomy.

The Volts slumped to five consecutive losses and then headed to Auckland and Mount Maunganui for a double-header last weekend.

Both games were washed out and it has been raining for the past three days in New Plymouth - where Otago has been patiently waiting to get out on to the park and get in some training before today's match against Central Districts.

The forecast looks bleak again. More rain - possibly heavy - and a northerly turning westerly.

"We've basically been stuck inside for a week," a hoarse Otago coach Mike Hesson lamented.

"It's pretty horrible, really. We're just keen to play and get on the park."

Otago captain Craig Cumming said earlier in the week he did not believe the Volts had been training with enough intensity and felt they had not been "hitting enough balls or bowling enough balls in the nets".

Hesson acknowledged his side was underdone and was looking at picking up the intensity.

"I think when you travel you are always trying to balance how much you train and how much you try and recover from training.

"Everyone is a little bit different, but we are looking at doing a few different things in terms of increasing intensity with the guys and we'll see how that goes."

But with a run of poor weather the Otago camp has been trapped indoors and unable to implement its new regime.

The constant travel has also taken its toll.

With Dunedin's University Oval out of action for most of the summer the team has spent about 10 nights in Dunedin since the season started on November 9.

"It is hard work, especially for those with families and partners. But we always knew that was going to be the case and we've got the carrot at the end of it with a really nice ground in Dunedin."

Otago has just three matches left in the HRV Cup to get a win and, while that remains a priority, Hesson accepted his team had started looking ahead to the one-day tournament which gets under way in January.

"[The one-day tournament] is probably in the back of our minds but we've got to look to play better twenty/20 cricket and that is what we are looking to do the next three games."

Otago is firmly anchored to the bottom of the competition table with just four points from two washed-out games.

Its opponent, Central Districts, is still very much in the mix with three wins and three losses.

One of Central's wins was a demoralising seven-wicket loss for Otago at Queens Park in Invercargill.

Former Otago player Kieran Noema-Barnett pounded his way into the record books with a 14-ball 50.

While there was some outstanding hitting, Otago did not ask enough questions of the 23-year-old and let itself down with some poor bowling.

Neil Wagner and Ian Butler have been expensive, conceding more than 10 runs an over, and Darren Stevens is not far behind.

The medium-pace trundler has bowled 84 deliveries for 134 runs.

Otago has shown potential with the bat but has often lost momentum.

Aaron Redmond has had no problem finding the middle of the bat but has been involved in too many run outs for the team's own good.

He is the competition's third-leading run-scorer with 199 runs at 39.80.

Butler and Derek de Boorder have also scored some valuable runs.

Central Districts has bolstered its ranks, with Jacob Oram returning from injury and Black Caps vice-captain Ross Taylor returning from international duty.
