Otago's Brendon McCullum and Jacob Duffy have been singled out for praise in the 2015 New Zealand Cricket Almanack.

McCullum was named as one of the publication's players of the year alongside Trent Boult, while Jacob Duffy's breakthrough season in first-class cricket had him named as one of three promising players.

McCullum led the Black Caps during a memorable 12 months in which the team was widely commended for its attacking brand of cricket.

He also made a big impact with the bat, swatting 202 against Pakistan and ''an even more extraordinary 195 in the first test against Sri Lanka'', the publication stated.

McCullum became the second New Zealand test batsman to reach 6000 career runs and the first to score more than 1000 in a calendar year.

He was in wonderful touch at the World Cup, scoring 328 runs at an impressive strike rate of 188.

''Few at Wellington that day will forget his 77 against England, scored off just 25 deliveries.''

Duffy (21) spearheaded Otago's attack last summer, taking 45 wickets at an average of 24.06, including three five-wicket bags.

It was a wonderful response from the big Southlander, who had struggled during the twenty20 tournament earlier in the summer.

He came right during the one-day tournament, where he took 18 wickets.

But Plunket Shield cricket remains the biggest challenge in the domestic game and Duffy was the competition's leading wicket-taker, heading off Canterbury's Todd Astle with 44 wickets.

He was rewarded by being selected as a backup player for the Black Caps' tour of England.

''For such a young player, he has shown great potential and another season with similar results will have him in the selectors' minds once more.''

Canterbury's Henry Nicholls and Central Districts' Will Young were named alongside Duffy as promising players.
