Cricket: Skipper hopes big loss a blip

New Otago captain Aaron Redmond has experienced the full range of emotions in the past few weeks.

His side made a brilliant start to the Plunket Shield with a six-wicket win against Canterbury. That game seemed destined for a draw but the Volts' bowling attack came through, dismissing Canterbury for just 61 in its second innings to set up the wonderful win.

For Redmond, who took over the captaincy from Craig Cumming this summer, it was a dream start. But a week later he got to experience the other end of the spectrum when his side was bowled out for a measly 63 and lost to Central Districts by an innings and seven runs.

"I think that was probably one of those things that happens once in a blue moon," Redmond said.

"When you look back over the years we haven't had a collapse like that in a while.

"So there is not a lot you can say after a situation like that. You can sit there and dwell on the negatives, but the biggest thing to come out of it is the guys who are getting starts need to kick on and get those big runs."

The batting line-up will not have to wait long for an opportunity to make amends. Otago's game against Northern Districts gets under way at the University Oval tomorrow.

The game shapes as a big occasion for Cumming. He is five runs short of overtaking Bert Sutcliffe as Otago's leading run-scorer.

The experienced opener has failed to convert some starts and is due. So too are Redmond and Neil Broom.

Both have impressive records for Otago but have not had the greatest start to the summer.

Meanwhile, Redmond believes the change to the way points are scored in the Plunket Shield this season has been a positive move.

"I think it is great. What it has done is taken away that negative mindset of just going for first-innings points. Everyone is looking to push on to get outright results. I think it has improved the competition and we are seeing more aggressive play."

With a maximum of 20 points on offer, fortunes can change dramatically from week to week. That has changed the way teams approach games.

"You can't get too focused on those first-innings bonus points. That won't win you the competition. You've got to bowl sides out twice and go for the maximum."

Northern Districts is coming off a big win against Wellington but is missing Black Caps Kane Williamson, Daniel Vettori, Tim Southee and Trent Boult.

Williamson, in particular, is a huge loss. He posted an undefeated 284 to help set up the win with Southee, who took seven for 37.

The internationals have been replaced by Joseph Yovich, Brook Hatwell, James Baker and Anurag Verma.

Yovich has recovered from a muscle injury while Mitchell Santner and Verma will make their first-class debuts if they make the starting XI.

Daniel Flynn is recovering from a groin injury and was unavailable for selection.

Otago has lost the services of Brendon McCullum who returns to the national squad. The only other change to the side is the return of James McMillan. The speedster picked up a niggle in the opening game and sat out the loss to Central Districts.

With McCullum unavailable, Michael Bracewell will likely return to the starting XI with Redmond shifting back up the order from first drop to opener. Bracewell was unlucky to miss selection after scoring 95 and 37 in the season-opener against Canterbury.
