Disgraced former Black Cap Lou Vincent has escaped conviction after appearing in Hamilton District Court.

The 39-year-old earlier pleaded guilty to wilfully damaging a car in Pukekohe in November and on Friday was granted a discharge without conviction, despite police opposition.

Vincent paid the car's owner more than $700 in reparations as part of a settlement.

The former New Zealand opener was banned from cricket for life by the England and Wales Cricket Board after admitting 18 counts of match fixing in 2014.

He gave evidence in Chris Cairns' perjury trial, which centred on match-fixing allegations, in London in 2015. Cairns was found not guilty.
