No 123: Goldie bashes the Australians (1993)
Later that year, he would embark on his remarkable All Black career with a hat trick of tries in his test debut against Scotland.
That came barely nine months after his international cricket debut, when he was selected at the age of 19 to play in a one-day series against Australia.
Wilson made his debut at Carisbrook, finishing the game with the inauspicious figures of one for 58 with the ball and a duck with the bat.
He didn't play in the second ODI but took two for 21 and scored 15 in the third, with the series moving to Hamilton at 2-1 to the Australians.
New Zealand was in a hole at 172 for five, chasing 248 to win, when Wilson came to the crease.
When he ran off 41 minutes later, the Black Caps had levelled the series with a three-wicket win.
Wilson's memorable contribution was a rapid-fire 44, scored off just 28 balls. He whacked three fours and a six before running off the field in delight, his golden hair trailing behind him.
"Goldie" would find little time for cricket over the following decade, with rugby taking precedence.
But, after retiring from rugby, he made a fairytale comeback to the summer game and represented New Zealand in two more ODIs in 2005.
Wilson pulled stumps on his cricket career the following year, having represented New Zealand six times (103 runs, four wickets) and played 39 first-class games (1245 runs, 129 wickets) and 51 limited-overs games (836 runs, 49 wickets).
