Lilly Paterson played her first match for Kaitangata Cricket Club on Saturday.

Nothing remarkable there ... except that 15-year-old Lilly was turning out for the men’s senior team — and she took three for 39.

To be fair to the Waihola Swans — Kaitangata’s opponents on Saturday — Paterson is a better-than-average cricketer and has been in the Otago Country Cricket Association secondary school girls squad for the past two seasons.

"She normally plays in the boy’s team for her school [South Otago High School] in the Dunedin competition on Saturday afternoons but that’s finished for the holiday break," her father, Glenn, said.

"Kai were short a couple of players and Lilly got a phone call, so she went down and played for them."

Things did not get off to a flying start for Lilly, who registered  a duck in the Kaitangata Kings’ 232 all out.

However, she bowled an impressive eight overs straight, her immaculate line and length helping restrict Waihola to 149.

"They were chasing runs so that probably helped a bit," Mr Paterson said.

"Hard to say if she’ll be called up again for next week but she’d quite like to ... she’s available anyway."
