The grass is greening up nicely, the banks are looking set and now it is going to be easy to tell the score.

The new scoreboard at the University Oval was installed yesterday and its systems tested to make sure it was capable of showing all the bells and whistles.

The new scoreboard was sourced from just up the road at Forsyth Barr Stadium and it is only two years old.

It is capable of displaying the action on a screen and can also show all the information every cricket fan wants.

The scoreboard and its relocation cost $110,000 all up, the money coming from the Otago Cricket Association, the Dunedin City Council and other sources.

As it was located outside and exposed to weather, a full cover was needed for it, Otago Cricket Association chief executive Mike Coggan said.

The old scoreboard at the oval came from Carisbrook and was more than 15-years-old. It had not worked properly for a couple of years and had been taken away and broken up to be used as scrap metal.

The association was also building a foundation for a camera on one of the newly heightened banks which would make it easier for television cameras to be installed.

He said that would help television companies come to the Oval as they would not have to pay for scaffolding.

The banks had been enlarged over the winter months and the rain of the past weeks had turned them into a lush green. The Oval's first first-class game of the season starts on November 5 when Otago hosts Central Districts.
