Otago fast bowlers Warren Barnes and Michael Rae look set to warm up for the season with a stint in grade cricket in Sydney.

The Otago Cricket Association has struck up a relationship with Northern District Cricket Club and will dispatch a couple of quicks in September.

Barnes and Rae shape as the most likely candidates but Otago Cricket performance and talent manager Simon Forde said a final decision had not yet been reached.

The opportunity was set up through former Black Cap and Volts bowler Ian Butler.

''He has a real affinity for Dunedin, so last time he was here we caught up and just explored the opportunities for our players to have access to the club or the school that he is associated with,'' Forde said.

Butler, who works at Knox Grammar School, is the bowling coach at Northern District.

The club usually gets an English professional each year but that player, as a a rule, does not arrive until three or four weeks after the start of the season.

''We saw a gap there where we could perhaps send some of our bowlers to get some really good playing opportunities.''

Northern requested fast bowling cover but will not be sending any top-order batsmen in return following a cheeky suggestion by the Otago Daily Times.

At this stage it is one-way traffic rather than an exchange. But Forde said there could be opportunities to return the favour and host players.

''We have to be open to all those sorts of things and just keep establishing networks internationally. We have to think big in that area I believe.

''If there are some opportunities then we have to nab them.''

There may also be a chance for some younger players to get some experience at Knox Grammar School.

''We just see it as the start of a long-term relationship which can be advantageous.''

Otago has a handful of players overseas. Legspinner Michael Rippon is with the Netherlands international squad, seamer Matt Bacon is in Australia's Northern Territory while Jack Hunter and new signing Mitch Renwick are playing club cricket in England.
