Equestrian rider Sofia Williams has been selected to represent New Zealand at the upcoming Youth Olympic Games in Dakar, Senegal.

For Williams, who has been selected for the individual jumping event, wearing the silver fern on the international stage is an important milestone.

‘‘I’m so excited to be selected for the Youth Olympic Games and to have the chance to represent New Zealand,’’ Williams said.

She looked forward to competing at a pinnacle event, especially in a country like Senegal.

‘‘Competing in Dakar is going to be a unique and eye-opening experience.

‘‘Being in a new environment, with athletes from all over the world, is something I can’t wait to be a part of.

‘‘I’m going over there to give my best in competition, but also to learn from the experience and being part of the New Zealand Team.’’

New Zealand Olympic Committee chief executive Nicki Nicol congratulated Williams on her selection.

‘‘We’re very proud of Sofia and her selection to the New Zealand Team for Dakar 2026,’’ Nicol said.

‘‘This is a significant milestone for Sofia as she carves her path in equestrian.

‘‘We know the Summer Youth Olympic Games can be a powerful learning opportunity, both on and off the field of play, and we wish Sofia all the very best as she prepares for Dakar.’’

Dakar will be the fourth Summer Youth Olympics, held between October and November, and the first Olympic sporting event to be held in Africa.

Further New Zealand team announcements will be made in the coming months. — Allied Media
