Una Madden may have found her happy place up front.

The 26-year-old played at the back and in the midfield in her first eight years in the Football South team, but is playing as a striker in this year's campaign.

She has scored two of the team's four goals - one against Auckland and one against the NZF Development team - in the first four games of the national league.

While Madden would prefer to play as a central midfielder if she was ''feeling as fit as a fiddle'', she is enjoying being the team's attacking spearhead.

''You see different things and come across different things,'' she said.

''I don't have the stress of having to deal with quick players attacking. Sides are getting better at being more incisive and attacking. I'm quite glad that I'm playing further up front, really.''

Madden, who played the majority of the club season for Roslyn-Wakari up front in winter, could see plenty of goal-scoring opportunities against Central in Palmerston North on Sunday.

Football South, which has gained a single point from its first four games, sits two spots above bottom-of-the-table Central in sixth place.

The two sides have both found wins hard to come by in recent years, with Football South last winning a game a couple of seasons ago.

Madden, who was born in England but has lived in Dunedin most her life, said Central is ''a bit of a bunny team for us''.

''It's always a real back and forwards game,'' she said.

''Both teams generally come out with real attacking intent, and we both see each other as a scalp. So I would say it will be quite an open game.''

Central is coming off a 7-1 thrashing by the NZF Development team last weekend, while Football South was outclassed 4-1 by Waikato-Bay of Plenty at Tahuna Park.

But Madden said there was a positive environment in the team run by first-year coach Hayley Stirling.

''Training sessions are really good and we are learning a fair amount. Everyone gets along pretty well,'' she said.

Outside of football, Madden works for the family brick and block laying business, Hugh Madden Ltd.

Football South is away to Capital in Wellington next weekend, before it wraps up the regular season against Mainland Pride at Tahuna Park on November 22.
