Southern United’s former captain has signed with a new club.

Conor O’Keeffe has joined Northern Ireland championship division team Newry City, alongside fellow former Southern player Stephen Lawless.

O’Keeffe spent four years with Southern, three of which he was captain, providing a reliable presence in the defensive line.

One of five Irishmen to join the club in 2016, he also worked as a development officer for Football South.

He returned home in July.

Lawless was with the team last season and also acted as its strength and conditioning coach.

O’Keeffe said in a release that he was enjoying time at the club so far.

“I’m delighted to sign for Newry City.

"It’s been a really enjoyable few weeks since I came in.

"Everyone at the club has been so welcoming and have made me feel part of the club straight away.

"I have played three games now in preseason and the style of play has been enjoyable to play in.

"I’m looking forward to the rest of preseason, getting fully fit and helping the team push for promotion back up to the premiership."

Coach Darren Mullen said the players had been recommended to the club by former Southern coach Paul O’Reilly.

He dubbed both quality signings.

“The signing of the two lads came out of the blue but I’m delighted they have joined the club," Mullen said.

"From their first training session you could see the quality that both players have.

"They have taken that into the three friendly games and have impressed not only the coaching staff but their fellow team-mates.

"Conor is a classy defender who makes things look really simple and Stephen has brought plenty of energy and creativity to our midfield."

The season has a provisional start date of October 17.
