Football was Zoi Sadowski-Synott’s first love.

She grew up playing the sport in Wanaka until she was 12 when snowboarding took over and her focus switched to the winter sport.

Snowboarding has served her well, though, leading to Olympic gold medals and making her a multiple world champion.

Football is still a big part of her life — she travels around the world with a ball by her side at competitions — and made her want to be a Beyond Greatness Champion for the Fifa Women’s World Cup in July and August.

"For me, it was about, you know, representing women’s sport in New Zealand and being a part of welcoming and promoting all the women’s teams coming to New Zealand, and influencing people to come watch the games and support the girls," Sadowski-Synott said.

She has already lent a helping hand at the official draw, and was in Dunedin last week at the volunteer uniform unveiling.

The World Cup is the biggest global event to be held in Dunedin, and with some elite players coming this way, Sadowski-Synott can not wait to be at the games cheering everyone.

She was excited to catch a glimpse of the defending champion, the United States, which plays in New Zealand as part of their pool.

"I think it’s just so exciting every time there is an event of this level.

"It’s the best players in the world and we have the privilege of having them in New Zealand and Australia.

"I’m excited to watch."

It is almost a dream come true for that young girl who started sport playing football to watch the superstars in New Zealand.

"For me, [football] was being outside and having fun with friends, but also dedicating time and effort to getting better.

"There’s something addicting about playing with a football."

Sadowski-Synott is joined as a champion of the event by former Football Fern Maia Jackman, Olympic rower Emma Twigg and Therese Walsh, who was heavily involved in the 2011 Rugby World Cup and 2015 Cricket World Cup.

Paralympian Ellie Cole, rugby sevens star Chloe Dalton, Olympic tennis player Casey Dellacqua, sports presenter Melanie McLaughlin and former Australian footballer Bruce Djite are Beyond Greatness Champions for Australia.
