Golf: Bay of Plenty frontrunner; Otago bows out

Southland will play Auckland and Bay of Plenty will meet Canterbury in the semifinals of the men's Toro interprovincial on the Poverty Bay course in Gisborne this morning.

The Bay team looks favoured to take this year's title after blitzing division two with six wins from as many matches and 24 games.

Southland got up to second in that division with 4.5 points and 18 games after halving with Tasman.

Auckland beat Wellington by a 4 to 1 margin for four points and 22 games to top division one, although it was a cut-throat event with three matches finishing on the final hole.

Canterbury also scored four points in the round robin but finished second to Auckland by a single game.

Meanwhile, Otago bowed out of this year's event with two 2 to 3 losses, going down to Southland in the morning and North Harbour in the afternoon.

In sharp contrast to 2010, when Otago made the semis, Otago finished down the table this year with 1.5 points and 11.5 games.

Brent McEwan, the Otago No1, started the day in style, beating his second New Zealand representative during the week.

He always looked in command against Vaughan McCall, who had just returned from international duty in Argentina.

In the afternoon, McEwan came up against 19-year-old North Harbour No1 Cameron Jones but lost on the final green.

Jones impressed with consistently long drives to turn two up but McEwan retaliated with four birdies on the homeward nine.

One loose shot from the par 3 sixth tee after getting back to square cost McEwan dearly and was the only difference between the players.

Andrew Hobbs at No2 had a mixed day, beating Southland's Cody Harper in 15 holes in the morning but going down to North Harbour's Kevin Budden in the afternoon.

Hobbs was frustrated throughout the day, with many putts horse-shoeing and failing to drop.

The Otago tail of Tyrone Ratahi, Mitch Bosley and Simon Hollyer failed to fire against Southland, all going down by margins of four.

In the afternoon, Ratahi and Chris Snow added some respectability to the tail, posting one-up wins over their Harbour opponents.

• The New Zealand team of Michael Hendry and Gareth Paddison enjoyed a solid start to the World Cup of Golf at Mission Hills in China, opening with a six-under-par 66 in the round-one four-balls to be in a share of 10th place, APNZ reports.

The Kiwis will begin the second round five shots back from the Australian pairing of Richard Green and Brendon Jones, who had an impressive 11-under 61 that included seven birdies and two eagles on the par-72 course on the South China island of Hainan.

The Aussies lead the Irish duo of Graeme McDowell and Rory McIlroy and Scotland's Martin Liard and Stephen Gallacher by two shots.

Ireland made ground on the Australians on the back nine with McIlroy, ranked No2 in the world and the US Open champion, holing five birdies and an eagle. McDowell, the 2010 US Open winner, had two birdies.

McIlroy and McDowell represent their native Northern Ireland as individual players but Ireland in team events. They were runners-up in the last edition in 2009 to Italy's Edoardo and Francesco Molinari, who have a share of 19th place.

Hendry and Paddison, both playing in their first World Cup, began well with three birdies in the opening seven holes and then came home strongly with an eagle two at the par-four 16th and a birdie at the 17th for the six-under total.

The format is two rounds each of foursomes and fourballs. The second round is foursomes.
