Denzel Ieremia (St Andrews) celebrated his 19th birthday in style winning the South Island men's championship by 10strokes over four rounds in fine conditions at St Clair during the weekend.

Ieremia rates his performance as his best ever, giving him his first national title, the St Clair course record and the lowest 72 hole score at St Clair in this event.

With rounds of 66, 61, 70 and 65 his record tally of 262 was five shots lower than Peter Lee set in 2013.

Ieremia has made a habit of going low, finishing 23 under par in the Junior Kaimai Classic two years ago.

His Saturday afternoon round of 61 included one eagle, nine birdies and a solitary bogey 4 on the par 3 heath.

He led from start to finish but it was his course record of 61 which made it difficult for the chasing pack.

His 61 eclipses rounds of 63 posted by Simon Brownlie (North Shore) in 2010 and Hayden Baird (Mt Maunganui) two years ago.

Brent McEwan playing at home was Ieremia's biggest threat, at four behind going into the final round.

But Ieremia finished with a six under par 65, while McEwan shot par to finish 10 shots back.

The North Shore Club was well represented, as Jason Gulasekharam and Cameron Jones finished third and fourth equal respectively.

Conditions were favourable for low scoring and the condition of the St Clair course meant that 12 amateurs finished under par.

Hills green keeper Mark Brooks finished in a tie for fourth while the future of Otago golf appears in good hands after 16 year old Inia Logan (Cromwell) finished four under par in sixth place.

Daniel Elder (Otago) was in a tie for seventh while Michael (Moxy) Smith (Otago) was in a tie for 11th.

Ryan Bellamy (St Clair) finished with par figures to finish 13th. Smith carded the lowest score yesterday morning with a perfect round of 64, comprised of seven birdies and 11 pars.

This launched the Sport Otago co coach golf into fifth place with one round to play and, despite his final round of 75, Smith took the handicap honours.
