Thomas Facer (Otago) successfully defended his Otago schoolboys' matchplay title yesterday, beating Queenstown's Jamie Anstiss 5 and 4 in the final at Chisholm Park.

Facer made an early break by carding birdies on the second and third holes and went four ahead when Anstiss bogeyed the fifth and sixth holes.

Anstiss grabbed one back with a birdie two at the seventh but his reprieve was short-lived when Facer made a birdie four on the eighth hole.

The pair halved the first three holes on the homeward nine but Facer went dormie five ahead when Anstiss bogeyed the par four 13. Anstiss showed better form in the early rounds when he achieved some impressive wins.

Facer is the third golfer to win the title but was fortunate to get past the second round when he had to win the final two holes against Kris Rush (Oamaru) to force a playoff which he won with a par four on the first extra hole.

Otago's top schoolboys will be in action today over two rounds against Aorangi with the Piper Cup at stake.
