Otago begins with two wins

Otago started well with two wins on the first day of competition of the junior interprovincial tournament on the Cambridge course in Waikato yesterday.

Otago romped home for a 6-0 clean sweep over Northland in the morning and edged ahead of a strong North Harbour sextet to win by 4-2.

Otago is now tied for the lead with Auckland in pool B with four points and 10 games while Manawatu-Whanganui is third with two points and six games.

The leader of the pool will be decided this morning when Otago plays Auckland in today's only round.

In the morning round, Otago got off to a flier and all six players led after the first four holes.

In particular, the under-16 pair of Callum White and Liam Judkins put their opponents on the back foot by winning three of the first four holes.

All of the players posted large winning margins except for Jack Turner who had a tight battle with Northland No1 Jorrit Stamm.

But Turner took control, birdieing 14 and 15 on his way to finishing the contest on the 17th green.

In the afternoon, Otago No6 Judkins struck an in-form Luke Old who ran hot and took the honours with three holes to spare.

Despite tight tussles, that was to be Otago's only loss as the other five matches went to the final two holes.

No3 Parker Aluesi lost the final hole to a birdie while Turner lost the final hole to an eagle-3 giving Otago two halves.

No2 Hayden Robertson holed out from 60m for an eagle-3 on the final hole to win 1-up while No3 Callum Judkins birdied the final hole for his narrow win.

No5 White posted his second win for the day beating Harbour's Jaewoo Son 2 and 1.
