The Federation Cup gets under way in Dunedin on Monday and the event is expected to attract 300-plus people to the city.

Otago Hockey Association general manager Rachel Minton-Smith is charged with ensuring the elite girls secondary school tournament runs smoothly.

''We started planning way back in January for this and the last three weeks have been pretty busy,'' she said.

''It is a big event for the city when you think about all those teams staying in motels and buying their groceries here.

''There are plenty of things for them to do here in the city as well, so it is big boost to the economy.''

It is a 16-team tournament with St Hilda's Collegiate School the only local representative.

Each team has a squad of 15 or 16 players plus a support staff of two or three people.

Who knows how many proud parents will also make the trip but 300-plus people are expected to arrive in Dunedin this weekend.

Minton-Smith said she had enjoyed fantastic support from the hockey and business community to help put everything in place to create the best possible environment.

''Local businesses have been really helpful in terms of getting things done. I've even got someone who is providing us with ice each day, so the players can take ice baths and things like that.

''We've had to get a bit creative because obviously we don't have those facilities here. It was a case of we've got some wheelie bins and we're going to fill them with ice - a bit of Kiwi ingenuity.''
