Ice Hockey: Last opportunities for Thunder to break duck

The Dunedin Thunder has two more opportunities to gain its maiden win in the national league but it is not going to be easy.

Games against the Canterbury Red Devils tonight (7pm) and tomorrow (4.30pm) at the Dunedin Ice Stadium are the final chances for the Thunder to break its duck.

The Dunedin side has lost its first 10 games in a predictably difficult debut season at the top provincial level, including losses to Canterbury by the unflattering margins of 4-16 and 3-10.

The Red Devils are leading the five-team league with a record of 10 wins and two draws.

But there was no white flag being run up within the squad, coach Jenel Bode said yesterday.

"We've been on a steep learning curve all season and it's going to be tough this weekend," she said.

"But we've improved a heck of a lot and we know we can scare some teams if we don't have any mental lapses."

The Queenstown-based Southern Stampede side has a double-header against the Botany Swarm in Auckland.
