Stampede exacts revenge

Revenge was sweet for the Stampede in Avondale on Sunday night.

The Queenstown team responded to its first loss in the New Zealand Ice Hockey League with an immediate and decisive win over the West Auckland Admirals.

The Stampede, having been pipped 2-1 the previous night, beat the Admirals 3-1.

The Stampede led 1-0 after the first period and 3-0 after the second period.

Jaden Skipper, Max Macharg and Mitchell Frear scored the goals.

That takes the Stampede to 24 points in the NZIHL, followed by the Canterbury Red Devils (19), the Admirals (17), the
Botany Swarm (15) and the Dunedin Thunder (3).

A doubleheader on home ice against the Red Devils now awaits the Queenstown team this weekend.

In the women’s league, both Otago teams lost the second leg of their respective doubleheaders on Sunday.

The Auckland Steel beat the Dunedin Thunder 7-4.

For those counting at home, that made it 23 goals in two entertaining games between the sides.

The Wakatipu Wild was beaten 2-1 in overtime by the Canterbury Inferno, a big turnaround after the Wild’s 5-0 win a day earlier.

Both Otago teams are on the road for the next round of games on September 3-4.

The Thunder heads to Christchurch, and the Wild will play on Auckland ice.
