St George Illawarra has given veteran coach Wayne Bennett a record seventh premiership by beating the Sydney Roosters 32-8 in the grand final of Australia's National Rugby League (NRL) in Sydney today.
Jason Nightingale scored two tries - his 15th and 16th of the season - as the Dragons captured their first NRL premiership in 31 years, ending a dispiriting run of five grand finals defeats.
Bennett, 60, surpassed Jack Gibson's record of six premierships as coach, adding Sunday's title to the six he won with the Brisbane Broncos between 1988 and 2008.
The Roosters, who finished last in the NRL in 2009, were attempting to become the first team since Western Suburbs in 1934 to go from last to first in a single season.
