New Zealand Warriors prop Jacob Lillyman will return to the National Rugby League in Sydney tomorrow night boosted by another taste of State of Origin football after a two-year absence.

Lillyman was part of Queensland's 16-12 victory in the series opener in Brisbane last week, an experience he will look to use as he prepares to lead the Warriors' go-forward against the Sydney Roosters.

"Spending that time with really high calibre players, the best players in the game, you do gain a bit of confidence and a few insights into how champions like Darren Lockyer prepare," he said.

"Hopefully I can bring that here and show it to all the younger players."

Lillyman, 27, played four Origin matches from 2006 to 2008, when he was with North Queensland.

His recall as Queensland look to extend a five-series winning streak under coach Mal Meninga didn't begin auspiciously.

His first two touches of the football after coming off the bench led to turnovers, but he then settled into his game.

"It was a shaky start," he agreed.

"Being a massive build-up, nerves probably got the better of me. You can't dwell on those things.

"I had a bit of a chat with Mal Meninga and he said, 'Yeah, you were a bit nervous at the start, but warmed into it okay'. It was good to get a bit confidence from him."

Lillyman, who last week signed for a further two years with the Warriors, arrived in Auckland before the 2009 season as a backrower.

He gave credit to coach Ivan Cleary for persevering with his switch to prop despite the player's own initial reluctance.

He said former Warriors Steve Price and Ruben Wiki had been among those he had turned to as he continued to develop in the role.

He cited greater variety in the way he carried the ball forward as one area he was working on.

"I've tended to be straight off, one out, into 'em," he said.

"Using a bit of variation is going to help me improve and just a few little things in defence, like the wrestle. There's always things to improve on and I'll keeping working on those no matter what."

Last weekend's bye has helped Lillyman freshen up from Origin as the Warriors look to extend a streak of five successive victories.

They have also won seven of their last eight, a run that includes a 24-12 defeat of the Roosters in Auckland in early April.

After losing their first three games of the season, the Warriors have risen to fifth on the table, eight points and eight places above the Roosters.

Cleary looks set to give rising star Shaun Johnson his NRL debut as replacement for halfback Brett Seymour, who received a facial injury in the last-up win over South Sydney.

Johnson, 20, has been surrounded by plenty of expectation since he debuted for the Junior Warriors two years ago and caught the eye of the great Andrew Johns, who praised him as a rare talent.
